There are two new Physics and Astronomy research facilities in the Integrated Sciences Center, located at the bottom and top floors of the new facility.
A new Optics Laboratory is being assembled on the bottom floor of the building to house the research of first-year faculty member Dr. George Marcus. This lab will include an optical table for a new type of optical measurement. Cavity ring-down spectroscopy is a technique used to analyze gases, liquids and thin-films. This technique yields very sensitive measurements of optical absorption and scattering by the sample. This allows for the detection of tiny amounts of contaminants in an otherwise "pure" substance. These measurements can be particularly useful for detecting and quantifying environmental pollutants.
On the roof of the new building Geneseo students will be able to view the universe from the roof-top Astronomy Observation Deck. Dr. Aaron Steinhauer will use optical telescopes, such as the brand-new Meade 20-inch Ritchey-Cretien, for student and public observations. To shelter the instruments, a fully-automated observatory dome will be installed on the Observation Deck.
